Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 21:31:50 -0500 (EST) From: William Josephson To: cty-boston@mattababy.org Subject: 02.10.1999 Minutes I have written things up in more or less chronological order, but please be sure to check out general notes on new meeting times [-WJ] Those present were: Anna Benefiel Sherri Davidoff Melissa Hao Christopher Wilmer Matthew Belmonte Brendan Connell William Josephson 1. Secretary * Now that Melissa is treasurer, we need to have a new secretary * In the absence of volunteers William agreed to take minutes for this meeting and write them up * Those present decided to defer the decision on a new secretary to next meeting 2. CTYAA class for Spring '99 -- Matthew * Matthew reported on the status of the course we are giving this spring - Chuck Beckman from the CTY office in Baltimore has agreed to help CTYAA by doing a mailing (at our expense) to Talent Search qualifiers in the Boston area provided he received a letter from MIT giving a formal "blessing" for the project - Matthew had already convinced a dean to send a letter to the CTY office in Baltimore; Chuck Beckman confirmed today (02.10) * Matthew reported that, subject to approval of those present, SIPB would join CTYAA and ESP in offering the course - The concern was raised that the reason for CTYAA's recognition was this course and that previously established organizations not overshadow CTYAA - The description of the course will now read "CTYAA in coopartion with ESP && SIPB"; everyone present concurred that SIPB's cooperation would be a Good Thing (tm) * Registration day for the course will be Sat. the 27th * Schemer's Inc., publisher of the Schemer's Guide, has offered a 10% discount on the bulk order of textbooks for the course. 3. Financial update -- Melissa * Appeals for funding are to take place later in February * We originally applied for enough money to pay for the textbooks for the course 4. Membership * Sherri agreed to work on the web site which currently resides on mattababy.org * William && Brendan discussed the issue of membership at Harvard briefly - Recap. from previous meetings: Given the Harvard policies it may be difficult to get CTYAA official recognition there - Aside from postering and contacting known alums on campus, Brendan and William will try to form a core group of CTYers at Harvard and establish regular meetings there * Pet worms were distributed (and eaten) * Matthew pointed out that CTY has been undertaking more concerted efforts to track people after CTY and organize alums to some extent - This is important since it means that Baltimore is interested in alum affairs and may be willing to help us to some extent in the future 5. Alumni social event -- Anna * We need to reserve space now for events later in the semester * Given that we are not a "cultural" organization and receive no money for food, etc. funding is an important issue * It was suggested that we intersperse more formal "business" meetings with informal meetings over dinner, etc. after business has been taken care of and/or at other points during the month 6. Future meetings * The general consensus was that we should have future meetings on a monthly basis with informal social get-togethers on alternate weeks for those interested ** It was noted that meeting times have been inconvenient for many people - The general consensus was not only to have more social gatherings but also to move meetings to an earlier time, e.g. about 6pm on Mondays/Wednesdays - Specific time and place is TBA * Matthew agreed to be the facilitator for the next meeting -WJ
