Subject: Linda Chavez's confirmation

Dear Senator Kerry

I hope that in the upcoming hearings on the confirmation of Linda Chavez as
Secretary of Labor, Democrates will avoid sinking to the level of the tactics
that the Republicans used eight years ago against some of President Clinton's
first nominees.  Nobody disputes that Ms Chavez had an illegal immigrant living
in her home.  Whether that relationship was formal or informal, and no matter
how much Ms Chavez knew about the woman's immigration status, the essential
fact is that Ms Chavez took into her home someone who'd had some hard times and
needed a break.  No Democrat should dispute that that was an admirable,
humanitarian course of action.
