From: mkb30@cam.ac.uk (Matthew Belmonte) To: info@annecampbell.org.uk Subject: no war on Iraq Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2003 22:52:44 +0000 Dear Mrs Campbell I was disappointed to learn that you voted last week in support of the Government's participation in the United States' impending war on Iraq. As you know, Cambridge as a university town is a stronghold of opposition to this war. Especially after the Government's weak attempt to show any danger posed by Saddam Hussein -- now notorious for its plagiarism from a twelve-year-old doctoral dissertation -- Parliament should approach arguments for war with scepticism. British solidarity with the United States has already made us the #2 target for terrorist reprisals, and British involvement in the United States' war would help breed a new generation of militants who lump a hatred of Britain in with their hatred of America. No convincing link between Iraq and al-Qaeda has been demonstrated, there is no guarantee that a post-Saddam Iraq wouldn't burst into internecine struggles, and the possible benefits of Saddam's ouster simply aren't worth the cost and the risks to political stability and to human life. I do hope that you'll reconsider your position on the war. Sincerely Matthew Belmonte [address]
