This important amendment would restore some measure of privacy to the reading public, by prohibiting the expenditure of any funds to search a library or a bookstore under section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act. The amendment would still allow the Department of Justice to use other legal means, including search warrants and subpoenas, to obtain library and bookstore records. I appreciate the courage and principle that you showed in voting against the USA PATRIOT Act a year and a half ago, and I hope that in the wake of its unfortunate passage, you'll support all legislative steps to limit its use. Sincerely, Matthew Belmonte [address]
