Twenty-three months ago, you made the mistake of voting for the USA PATRIOT Act, a law that permits government to collect information about the books that I read, the products that I purchase, and the details of my personal finances. With only the most minimal judicial review, government agents can now obtain many types of my personal records -- educational, medical, financial, sales, library and others -- even if they have no probable cause to believe that I've been involved in any crime. I urge you now to support any effort to help ameliorate the provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, such as the use of 'sneak and peek' warrants and secret searches of library records, as part of the annual appropriations process. A significant PATRIOT Act fix has already passed in the House – it is now the Senate’s turn to take action. Again, I urge you to support reversals of provisions in the PATRIOT Act that threaten civil liberties. I and the other 1200 people who rallied against the PATRIOT Act outside Faneuil Hall two weeks ago are not going away, and we call upon you to represent us. Sincerely, Matthew Belmonte
