I hope that tomorrow in the Judiciary Committee when you mark up S.1860, the reauthorisation of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, you'll support the complete elimination of the Higher Education Act's prohibition on federal financial aid to students convicted of drug offences. As currently written, S.1860 would repeal the financial aid ban only for people who were not recipients of such aid at the time of their offences. This is better than what we have now, but still not good enough. Denying access to higher education only makes life more difficult for students who have turned to drug use. Many of these people are those who most need the opportunity provided by education.
