I hope that you'll use your position in the Judiciary Committee to support three bills introduced by Senator Feinstein to combat identity theft. S.29 would establish criminal penalties for misuse of Social Security numbers. S.115 would require both the federal government and private companies engaged in interstate commerce to inform individuals whose personal data have been compromised by a security breach. S.116 would require a person's individual consent before that person's data could be sold or marketed. The recent publicity surrounding security breaches at private data aggregation companies, as well as the growing problem of identity theft, demonstrates what a serious problem this is, and how much the United States could benefit from enacting privacy safeguards along the same lines as the data protection acts in force in Europe and Canada. I look forward to reading your thoughts on this issue.
