I hope that you'll co-sponsor HR 952, a bill introduced by Representative Markey to stop the Bush Administration's practice of transporting possibly innocent people to countries in which they may be tortured. Many people who have been subjected to this mistreatment have subsequently been released without charge, after physical pain and in some cases years of lost liberty. The stories of Maher Arar and Khaled el-Masri are two poignant examples -- and these are only the ones whom we know about, after they were finally released. If the United States is to retain its moral credibility in addressing worldwide terrorism, it must take the high road in its treatment of those who are suspected of having information on terror activities. Anything less, coming from a state that claims to be defending freedom and supporting human rights, is the height of hypocrisy.
