I hope that you'll vote for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Though measures do need to be taken to ensure that the United States' trading partners enforce their own labour laws, disagreement over how to implement these labour standards shouldn't be allowed to scupper the entire accord. Although some industries - and some trade unions - will suffer, on the whole expansion of trade will benefit the United States economy, especially since Central American states will become more able to counter China as United States trading partners. There is a wealth of issues on which the Bush agenda must be opposed. CAFTA isn't one of them, and if Democrats try to block it they not only will be striking down a good idea but will risk reinforcing an obstructionist image.
