Barring any new and surprising revelations about John Roberts' qualifications and philosophy, I hope that the Senate will act deliberately, decorously, and expeditiously to confirm his appointment to the Supreme Court. Although there are confirmation battles worth fighting, this is not one of them. An attempt to block a nominee as well qualified as Roberts would cost Democrats valuable political capital. In recent weeks, some Democrats and advocacy groups have used against Judge Roberts the same smear tactics that were used against the Democrats at the most recent election, quoting his arguments out of context and confusing his own views as a jurist with those that it had been his job to defend as an attorney. In contrast to the left's shrill predictions, the total of the evidence suggests one conclusion: John Roberts is a keen intellectual who values above all the intent of the law. These qualities make him a fine candidate for the Court.
