I know that you'll oppose the House version of the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorisation in the upcoming conference, and I thank you also for your co-sponsorship and continuing support for the Security and Freedom Ensured (SAFE) Act, which would take appropriate steps to reform the USA PATRIOT Act. The Bush government have maintained that the furore over the USA PATRIOT Act's provision for warrantless access to library records ought to be a non-issue since this power is little used. This past week, however, it has been revealed that a member of the American Library Association is engaged in a legal battle with the FBI over just such National Security Letter access to its records. This development is made even more distressing by the fact that all substantive discussion of the case has been prevented by a gag order. Given these Orwellian events, I hope that we can all redouble our efforts to oppose the USA PATRIOT Act. Again, I hope that you'll oppose the House version of the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorisation, and I thank you for your support of the SAFE Act.
