I urge you to oppose the House version of the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorisation in the upcoming conference. I also urge you to support the Security and Freedom Ensured (SAFE) Act, which would take appropriate steps to reform the USA PATRIOT Act. The Bush government have maintained that the furore over the USA PATRIOT Act's provision for warrantless access to library records ought to be a non-issue since this power is little used. This past week, however, it has been revealed that a member of the American Library Association is engaged in a legal battle with the FBI over just such National Security Letter access to its records. This development is made even more distressing by the fact that all substantive discussion of the case has been prevented by a gag order. Given these Orwellian events, I hope that you'll reverse your past support for the USA PATRIOT Act. Again, I hope that you'll oppose the House version of the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorisation, and support the SAFE Act.
