I hope that you'll reconsider your decision to co-sponsor HR 4452, the Leave All Blades Behind Act. This bill would continue a ban on small scissors, screwdrivers, and other useful tools in the cabins of commercial passenger flights in the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration has determined that these tools do not pose a significant threat to aircraft safety. Continuing the ban would constitute yet another instance in which the United States airport security system diverts its time and efforts to build a public image of security, instead of spending its resources on the substance of security. I travel very frequently with tools, and for the past four years this misguided policy has forced me to spend extra time checking baggage or extra money buying identical tools at my destination when I travel by air in the United States. What most galls me about this policy is its utter uselessness for its purported aim of increasing aircraft safety. It's a sad commentary on how far the United States has fallen, that its people gauge their level of security by the number of everyday liberties that they've been forced to surrender.
