I urge you to support S.2635, the Bicycle Commuters Benefits Act. When Congress enacted the current Transportation Fringe Benefit, it considered the large number of people who commute using public transport but neglected those of us who cycle. Especially here in Boston, cycling is often the most efficient way to travel - it's faster than the T, produces no harmful emissions, doesn't contribute to the United States' dependence on foreign oil, and benefits public health. However, cycling isn't free: given regular use in commuting - and especially given the grit and salt of Boston winters - cycles require regular tune-ups and replacement of worn parts. In fact, regular commutes of significant distance can be comparably expensive to what one would spend taking the T. Given such expenses, fairness ought to dictate that train riders and cyclists ought to be treated equitably for purposes of the Transportation Fringe Benefit.
