I urge you to support stronger sanctions and incentives for change in Burma at Monday's meeting of the EU Council of Ministers. If we do not act, we will undermine the EU warning from 25 September - that we "will not hesitate to reinforce and strengthen the existing sanctions regime, should [the junta] resort to using violence against the unarmed and peaceful demonstrators." We must back up these words with actions, in the form of targeted sanctions that will weaken Burma's rulers without inordinately harming the Burmese people, sanctions focused on their expropriation of Burma's rubies, timber, metals, oil, gas, and other natural resources. There must also be the prospect of an investment ban if no progress is made soon. The world is looking to Britain and the EU for leadership on this critical issue. Please take a stand for human rights and democracy by supporting stronger sanctions and incentives on Monday.
