President-Elect Obama: I urge you to take immediate action, as soon as you become president, to halt the Guantanamo Bay trial of Omar Khadr. Unless you act quickly, on 26 January the United States will become the first western nation in recent years to try a person for war crimes allegedly committed as a child. Khadr should be either repatriated to Canada or, if there actually is evidence to support trying him, prosecuted in open court in accordance with international juvenile justice and fair trial standards. I also urge you to act in the case of Mohammed Jawad, the other known juvenile prisoner at Guantanamo Bay. Simply announcing plans to close Guantanamo Bay at some point in the future won't end this ongoing affront to due process. I urge you to terminate the unjust system of military commissions immediately and to act swiftly on the actual closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison.
