I hope that you'll support HR 3245, the Fairness in Cocaine Sentencing Act. Under current federal law, it takes 500 grams of powder cocaine to trigger a mandatory minimum five-year sentence for possession, but only 5 grams of crack cocaine. Prosecutions for crack cocaine are disproportionately directed at people who are black (even though most crack users are white). The resulting disparity in sentencing reinforces racial divisions. Someday cocaine use will be approached as a public health problem to be treated, rather than as a crime to be punished. In the meantime, though, we can at least assure that the punishments are free of racial bias. HR 3245 is an important step towards that unbiased culture, as indicated by its recent bipartisan, unanimous support in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
