The Government's proposed Criminal Justice and Courts Bill is back in the Commons this coming week, and I hope that you'll oppose the Government's version and restore the Lords' modifications. Our system of justice is meant to be accessible and fair to all. The Government's version of this bill would hamstring charities and non-governmental organisations, not to mention individual defendants, by imposing the threat of significant costs associated with the filing of amicus briefs. Such a scenario would be likely to deter people and groups without significant means from going to court, allowing the Government to behave with impunity. That is not what our court system is designed for.
