Please protect Fourth Amendment rights and oppose the reauthorisation of Section 702, originally enacted in the FISA Amendments Act. That authority -- which lets the U.S. government spy on millions of innocent people, including Americans -- is scheduled to expire 31 December, and it is time to let this draconian authority sunset. When first enacted, Section 702 was sold to Congress as a "targeted" surveillance authority aimed at foreigners outside the United States. Today, we know that Americans' private communications are constantly swept up by the National Security Agency, and there are inadequate privacy measures in place once such communications are unjustifiably collected. Law enforcement agencies like the FBI then search through everyone's email, text messages, and more-all without ever getting a warrant. These schemes are exactly the type of "general search" fought against by the founders of the American republic and the authors of the Bill of Rights. Millions of innocent people are subject to search, and no judge ever reviews or approves the "targets" of this surveillance. It is more important now than ever that the United States return to its fundamental constitutional principles and protections. That's why I'm urging you to oppose efforts to reauthorise this surveillance, and instead to let the sun set on mass Internet spying.
