I ask that you oppose H.R. 1501 and S. 254, and also oppose or support the following amendments, as indicated: SUPPORT: Waters Amendment (#128) Eliminates new mandatory minimum sentences included in McCollum amendment #162, some of which apply even to children. Scott Amendment (#38) Amends McCollum amendment to prevent children from being housed with adult offenders or tried as adults. Davis Amendment (#164) Assures that the right of children to receive counsel is not waived without counsel. OPPOSE McCollum Amendment (# 162) Monstrous bill that would put children in jail with adult offenders and allow them to be tried in adult courts, and would impose new mandatory minimum sentences, some of them on children accused of nonviolent drug offenses. Kucinich Amendment (#40) Would open and allow for broad dissemination of juvenile records. Barr Amendment (#139) Would place children at risk of assault and abuse in adult jails. Franks Amendment - would require that schools and libraries receiving Universal Service, or "E-Rate," funding install and use, Internet blocking and filtering software. Hyde Amendment - resembles the unconstitutional Communications Decency Act, but is broader since it would censor all media, not just the Internet.
