In order to avoid this blurring, we adopted a two-phase strategy in which we first compared brain activation during the attentional task to brain activation at rest, in order to generate a map of functional anatomy in each individual.

After establishing the individual maps, we looked within the attention task, comparing periods of leftward attention to periods of rightward attention within individual regions of interest.
